Winter Park has designated a specific area of the mountain to avalanche training. It's called Beacon Basin. It's where backcountry skiers and boarders can learn about using personal avalanche transmitters. In Beacon Basin, which is at the bottom of the Primrose Trail before Lunch Rock, there are eight buried transmitters. Ski Patrol can activate them at any time for training purposes. Full Article

Winter Park is reaching new heights by starting construction on what will be the highest, high-speed six-pack chairlift in North America. Construction has just begun on the new $8 million lift, in Winter Park's Parsenn Bowl. The new Leitner-Poma chair will take skiers and riders up to approximately 12,060 feet above sea level. If you have ever seen a dog running around your local ski patrol hut, you can bet they are not there to just play. Many resorts have avalanche dogs, trained to jump into action in the unlikely event of an avalanche. In January, more than 30 teams of highly-trained avalanche rescue dogs and their handlers renewed their skills in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Full Article

All the excitement has been at Winter Park recently as Mary Jane celebrated its 31st birthday. The non-stop week of fun included the Mary Jane Look-Alike Contest, as well as parades, competitions (human bowling?) and fireworks. Full Article

It has been a world of white in Denver this winter, as the Front Range city has been unseasonably pounded with snow. Denver is taking advantage of plenty of powder by building a terrain park, with the help of Denver-owned Winter Park Resort. Full Article

Utah and Colorado's crazy weather patterns have continued with sporadic blasting snowstorms. Resorts have been getting a foot or so, with a few days off between storms. The heavy snow triggered an avalanche on Berthoud Pass, which is the road you take from Denver and I-70 to get to Winter Park. Full Article

Once again, a big holiday storm slammed Colorado's Front Range. This time, the snow piled up post-Christmas, and hit Denver and Boulder the hardest. Resorts closer to the Front Range got the most snow, such as Eldora, SolVista Basin, and Loveland. Winter Park loved the snow, as you can see from the powder picture. Full Article

Denverites were hit hard for the second time in a little more than a week as a major winter storm rolled through the area, knocking out power and shutting down the airport again. The ski areas, meanwhile, stayed pretty dry. Full Article
