I agree with a lot of what all of you have said about Steamboat .... its family freindly , excellent snow and yes there are plenty of technical runs (BUT you do have to know how to piece it all together for a complete top to bottom run ) .... Best mountain for locals and frequent visitors who know the secret stashes of pow pow 4 sure!

Boat is a bit flat... Other than a handful of runs the black runs (double black in the blue-black moutain rating) are not worthy their category and should be downgraded to blur-black

As a Colorado native, as well as a Steamboat resident, i find a lot of this "Flat Boat" topic disappointing. Especially in this age of online research, there really is no excuse to be surprised at a resorts terrain. First and foremost Steamboat has never been known for steeps. If that is what one seeks, you would be better served making the trek to Silverton, Crested Butte, or Jackson Hole. I actually spent a good portion of my youth skiing down the road from Jackson at Targhee, and can appreciate steeps. That being said, the area that Steamboat excells in, is deep dry snow, and fantastic tree skiing. all yiu have to do is check the base depths, and with a base which is nearly double of what some of the front range resorts are, that question is put to rest. Tree skiing is an aquired taste and a skill which is not fully appreciated by the casual public, so I can understand the average weekend warrior attempting to sound intelligent lamenting the lack of steeps while underappreciating the fantastic glades. i am fine if the 45 minute Presidents Day liftlines stay where they belong, on the front range. I for one wont miss anyone not wanting to ski the Boat, tracking up all the sweep pow in the process!
