Silverton Mountain's unguided skiing is the way to go. You can go off on your own and not worry about some punk guide telling you what to do. The guides are young, dumb, and act like they are the best. I could out-ski them on one ski. The terrain is about average steepness for the San Juans with some couloirs pushing 45 degrees. These funnel into bowls that are nice, but some are just barely steep enough to stay afloat. The tree-skiing is the best I have ever experienced. The trees here are immensely under appreciated. The hiking from the bottoms of the runs back to the lift are the most time-wasting part of the day. Waiting for the shuttle is not really an option, because there will be over a hundred people trying to ride a twelve person van. Go here, hike your butt off, get some steeps and some freshies, and you will have a huge smile.
