I am a Mom and a new skier, my husband is an expert skier. We have traveled to Big Bear, Vail, Ski Beach and other resorts but have fallen in love with Durango for its incredible beauty, people warmth, huge variety of year round outdoor activities and great restaurants, nightlife and arts events in the town. The resort itself is small, but is just a 30 minute drive from the historic town of Durango which is overflowing with restaurants and nightlife (the Ft Lewis College has lots of events too). The former resort lodge was something of a joke, but last year they completed a new Purgatory lodge with an outdoor heated pool, large hot tub and a well equipped fitness center. This year they added more expert terrain which hubby is very excited about. Some of the lifts lifts are older compared to a resort like vail but the 6 pack lift is fast and the lower prices for lifts and lodging, the warmth of the people, beauty of the landscape and the great town of Durango have stolen our heart! (additional high speed lifts are slated for development in the next couple years). We first went to Durango as a couple on a romantic trip and loved it. Since then we have taken our Mom, husbands parents, Grandma and numerous family members there. When there is not snow there is still tons to do:hiking, mountain biking, flyfishing, water rafting, browsing art galleries, horseback riding, antique hunting, train riding.......All in all a great place to snuggle explore and play with a loved one or with a family.
