Caption: Setting Up for Pipe Cutter Prep : : : : : : : : Thursday’s shot is of the vehicle maintenance crew maneuvering Crested Butte Mountain Resort’s Zaugg super pipe cutter into position for some preseason maintenance. I bet there are plenty of small parts to tighten and lube on that unit. The Zaugg and other cutters like it have always reminded me more of farm implements gone awry than snow shaping machines, but these are common equipment at ski resorts these days. While most of the super pipe shape is dozed into place by the cat crew, the final curve of the pipe is achieved by attaching this unit to the front of a snow cat and very carefully working it up and down the pipe. Operating the Zaugg no doubt takes a steady hand and an eye for detail! : : : : : : : : Wednesday was mostly cloudy with snow showers in the high country around Crested Butte. Looks like we’re in for clearing and a bit of a warming trend as we head into the weekend, though. Have a great day and we’ll catch you tomorrow.
