Great park & pipe is usually well maintained
Not enough advanced terrain
Northstar is a great resort for families as most runs are in the beginner to intermediate category. There is lots of discussion about the Forest Service granting leases to new areas but so far nothing has been confirmed. On a good dump, powder hounds may want to spend their day on Lookout now that the base for that lift has been dropped enough to allow for good tree runs off Proser & on the opposite side. Otherwise the Backside is the best option.
Northstar also puts a lot of effort into keeping a great park. There's tons of new obstacles put in through most of the winter & The Stash is a great addition to the typical rails & boxes with a natural touch, kind of like the fun stuff you'd find in a great backwoods run but with a park influence. The park staff also makes sure to keep all features of the park well maintained & groomed. This year the mountain suffered a little as some of the management departed & the park suffered in January & early February. But we can expect the great maintenance & grooming to get back to normal for the rest of the year.
As for Apres, I'd have to say that the base is lacking big time. I don't mind paying for overpriced drinks around the ice skating rink once in awhile but this is mostly a family hangout. The restaurant scene also caters to the wealthier patrons but since you're only 10 minutes from downtown Truckee, you may want to hit the slopes & split as soon as the last lift shuts down. But make sure you try one of those waffles at the Euro Shack... those things are as addictive as the finest narcotics... and they are served by some of the fine international ladies that frequent the area in winter.
Finally, if there are any of you planning romantic getaways, this is a good place. Chances are your chick doesn't rip anywhere as much as you do so this is a great mountain for getting some private time with her on the bunny slopes. And the views from the rooms around the rink are majestic.
