Full review

In this drought season, Northstar is clearly the best around the lake. The extent of good quality skiable runs is astonishing. Squaw ran out of water. Alpine covered too much, with too little, and chewed up my skis. Heavenly is good, but not nearly as extensive. Example: Yesterday Martis run was nicely edgable at the steep top section, and I've skied there in good years when this part was glare ice there; the whole run is completely covered & nicely groomed. Northstar's slope rating is a bit soft -- they have black diamonds on runs that Squaw would rate as blue squares. "secret": Ride around Loggers Loop (stay skier's right), and find Sean White's half pipe. When there's not a competition, you can ski down through it & get a sense of how huge these things are.
