This is a great ski area, but it's not a ski resort by ANY stretch of the imagination. When it's just dumped, its good - best in SoCal by far.
I was up hiking there over the summer and noted a huge reservoir under construction. Sure enough, per their website, its supposed to go operational this winter. That should better my biggest beef. You usually can't ski down to the base area unless the snow gods have been particularly generous.
Rickety chairs? Well, as a guy who learned how to ski in '68, they seem vintage. Cell phone coverage is completely absent. Another plus. Chairs are doubles: that means you get to talk to the person next to you, and maybe get to know somebody new. For a ski area so close to LA, the lines are pretty short, unlike the other areas around here. More vertical, more challenging slopes. No night skiing. There might be a bar, but I didn't notice it. There's some lodging down in the village, but it's rustic just like the area. Not a date place, or some place to take someone to impress, but I had a great day skiing with a friend and making new ones.
