I just went this last weekend (1/10-1/12), and it was a lot better than I expected. I was expecting hard pack ice, but there was some decent powder in a lot of areas (man made). There are some icy spots so you have to be careful. Your best bet is to go on a non windy day. Yes only 1/3 trails are open but it's still fun to go. Most of the (man made) powder was near main lodge. Canyon was decent too. It's best in the morning and becomes very lumpy by 2pm from all the shredding. It snowed on Saturday for a couple hours but not enough to generate a report?

Much of the snowmaking has been diverted to getting Main park ready for the Olympic snowboarding finals. Elsewhere, the snow is extremely variable, from fluffy powder beater near the snowmaking guns, to "grabby" ice, to snowcat-scraped extremely thin spots. Each chair has only 1-2 runs accessible. Nevertheless, it Is still fun, and if you have to have "weather," it might as well be 40s and beautiful. It is not possible to avoid the floating rocks, floating pebbles, and blown-in gravel. You WILL wreck your bases, so only ride your rock-board or skis. They need snow desperately, but have done a great job with snowmaking. "Absolutely horrible, yet still lots of fun" is the only way to describe it.

I wonder why the grand prix in tahoe got moved to breck but mammoth is still gonna host their spot. They are making the jumps in main park even bigger. Also they are almost done building the 22 ft superpipe. I hope they can open up south park, wonderland park, jibs galore, and disco.
