Mammoth is doing a great job with the conditions as they are, coodos. For those who enjoy skiing without being critical, it has been great. Yes there are some floaters (rocks) but they are small. Rock skiis could give you peace of mind. Not disappointed.

The severity of the California drought is nowhere more apparent than it is here at Mammoth. Not a whole lot of runs are open. Cornice Bowl has ice and exposed rocks on the shady side of the run. I definitely saw several people sliding/falling down a quarter of the run after losing traction. Snow towards the middle of Cornice is nice though. For everywhere else on the mountain, the best snow can be found on the bunny slopes (i.e. Stump Alley and Broadway). Other runs of the black blue variety have sketchy coverage. There are plenty of patches of ice and exposed rocks on those runs and the sides of the runs are completely brown in most areas. You'll even find stray pebbles on many of the runs. If you're looking for good snow out west, then you should head to Colorado or Utah but Mammoth may have the most terrain open for California.

snow is hard packed and turns to ice by mid afternoon. limited number of open lifts makes the snow areas crowded and packed so expect a large crowd....overall a solid trip but not even close to mammoths full potential

I just went this last weekend (1/10-1/12), and it was a lot better than I expected. I was expecting hard pack ice, but there was some decent powder in a lot of areas (man made). There are some icy spots so you have to be careful. Your best bet is to go on a non windy day. Yes only 1/3 trails are open but it's still fun to go. Most of the (man made) powder was near main lodge. Canyon was decent too. It's best in the morning and becomes very lumpy by 2pm from all the shredding. It snowed on Saturday for a couple hours but not enough to generate a report?
