Mammoth terrain is top notch! The slopes are wide and steep, and the snow has been nearly as good Colorado. This season the snow quality was definitely worse than the Rockies.
So my complaints: This place is really expensive. I lived in Denver before relocating to SoCal and after 3 years, I am convinced there is no such thing as a discount. In Colorado and in Vancouver, one can get lift tickets to Vail, Beaver Creek, Breck, Copper, and Whistler/Blackcomb for a little more than half the price of Mammoth. Search in craigslist for discounts before a trip or stop by King Sooper's (or buy a 4-pass) or 7-11 in Vancouver for a discount. Mammoth breaks the bank everytime!
I love the place, but it's difficult to justify more than 2 trips a season with the prices and the long commute from LA.
Also. I guess this is characteristic of a resort near a large city: Lock your board/ skiis. My board is about 500 retail, and I hear stories about stolen equipment at Mammoth every now and then.
