Kirkwood is the perfect well rounded resort. It has great steeps, great beginner terrain, great trees, great bowls, and there is always a challenge lurking around every turn. And, like so many other sierra resorts, it most definitely has the snowfall to back it all up and keep the mountain running. Out of all the Tahoe resorts, this might be my favorite. While it is certainly not "uncrowded" it is a little off the beaten path of the rest of the Tahoe area, and it lacks that direct four lane freeway access that brings the masses into resorts like Northstar and Squaw. That being said however, it is a little more of a challenge to get to. Probably best if you are coming from the Nevada side, although I've never come through central California to get here. Not much going on in terms of nightlife compared to south lake tahoe, but this mountain is really catered much more toward pure skiing. No frills. It doesn't have to sell its world class food to get people to come, because they'll come just for the skiing.
