Bulgaria: Easy Access With Modern Ski Resorts -
Bulgaria features the big ski resorts of Bansko, Borovets, and Pamporovo, as well as the smaller resorts of Chepelare and Vitosha.
Bansko has recently benefited from a multi-million-euro investment and boasts the most up-to-date ski facilities in Bulgaria. It also has the best snow record and the longest ski season in the country. New hotels and restaurants are also popping up all over the resort. There is a wide selection of accommodation from small family-run pensions to luxury hotels.
Nestled at the foot of the Pirin Mountain, Bansko is a favourite with skiers and snowboarders of all levels. This is a ski area between 2000 and 2600 metres set at 925 metres altitude, and offers good snow coverage from mid-December to mid-May. The slopes are also complete with 44 snow cannons and are linked via chair lifts, drags, and an eight-seater gondola.
Snowboarders can try out tricks on the first snow park in the Balkans. Five kilometres of cross-country skiing is also available. Taste local food and wines at a choice of traditional Bansko taverns after a day on the mountain. There's also a choice of lively bars and discos. Bansko is 160 kilometres from Sofia Airport.
Dating back to 1896, Borovets is the oldest winter resort in Bulgaria. Borovets is also the biggest resort in the country, set at an altitude of 1380 metres. Skiers can reach a height of 2600 metres. Situated on the Rila Mountain, the resort features picturesque alpine-style pistes fringed with pine trees. There is also reliable snow coverage between mid December and the end of April.
Borovets offers 45 kilometres of pistes for all levels of skiers and snowboarders and is connected by chair lifts and a gondola. Borovets has also twice hosted World Cup competitions. The modern centre offers a good choice of hotels, restaurants, shops, discos, and bars. Borovets is easily accessible, located just 72 kilometres from Sofia Airport.
The modern ski resort of Pamporovo is one of the most southerly ski resorts in Europe. Set at 1650 metres, it combines good snow coverage and plenty of sunshine throughout the winter season. Ski slopes range from 1450 to 1926 metres altitude. Expert skiers will enjoy the challenging Giant Slalom while beginners practise on the wide gentle slopes. The resort offers a wide choice of ski rental shops and more than 100 qualified ski instructors fluent in a variety of languages. The town centre is bursting with shops, bars, and restaurants. Pamporovo is 240 kilometres from Sofia Airport.
