January 6: 16 cm of new snow seemed like enough of a reason to make the drive to Golden. We arrived at 8:30 to a busy base area, everyone chomping at the bit to get up high and into the bowls, as there only seemed to be about 6-8 cm on the lower mountain. I'd heard they have had a great snow year so was pretty disappointed to hear that the gondola (the only lift to the top) was down due to high wind.
There was a pretty big line for the gondola, folks waiting (praying?) for the winds to die, so we headed up the Catamount quad and then hit a fast groomer over to the Pioneer double, the original old chair frm when Kicking Horse was the small, local Whitetooth ski area.
The runs off the Pioneer are decent enough, good rolling fall-line burners and some nice trees, and we enjoyed 2 good runs through the 6-8 cm of fresh. After that, I think people got tired of waiting for the gondola to open and there were suddenly 20 minute line-ups at both the chairs for most of the rest of the day. Things got skiied out pretty quickly after that. The gondola never opened. Unfortunate but what can you do about weather? I'll try again later, as KH is having a very good snow year.
Post - script: 43 cm Monday January 8 morning. The gondola was running. Must have been epic...
