The upmarket neighbour of St Anton in Austria's Arlberg region, Lech, has eight feet of snow on upper slopes (more than usual) and two feet at the base (a little less than normal). The resort, which famously stages a yacht show despite being more than 4000 feet up in the Alps, is a major draw for the rich and famous. Full Article

With an eight foot snow depth on upper slopes, just a little below the huge average for this time of year, St Anton is gearing up for it's popular Spring skiing season. The resort has a lot of Spring special deals including the popular Firn week from March 24th to 31st as well as the sun skiing package rate of April 7th to 14th.

Many Austrian ski areas have been benefitting from daily falls of six inches or more over recent days. The Tux glacier, one of the few remaining year round ski areas in Europe, has passed the six foot mark for snow depth on upper slopes, currently reporting six feet, six inches of snow. Full Article

Alas it has come too late for the famous Hahnenkamm downhill race cancelled at Kitzbuhel that should have been run last weekend, but Austria's 600 or so ski areas have seen, typically, a foot of snow falling over a 48 hour period last week. The new snow has bolstered meagre coverings on higher slopes and made skiing back to resort realistic for the first time in many cases.

A trend in the Alps in recent years has been to put magic carpet conveyor lifts under long clear fabric tents to protect users from the elements when making the ascent in windy and snowy conditions - the surface lift equivalent of the pull down hood on a chairlift.

Several of the country's leading resorts postponed opening until the pre-Christmas weekend and in some cases only have a few centimetre (an inch or two) of machine made snow on the lower slopes.
