I moved to Phoenix in July 2007 from Michigan and you have it great here. There are actual mountains with 2,000+ feet of vertical and snow in excess of 200 inches in a good winter. In Michigan we would be lucky if we received more than 100 inches a winter with lake-effect snow and we would drive 4 hours to get a 500 foot vertical ski area with 40 trails. The Midwest is home for over 40 million people who have to drive 10 hours to the Northeast or 25 hours to the Rockies. Having Snowbowl only a 2 hour drive from Phoenix, with a great winter this year, it is a nice ski resort. Upgrades are planned, but the owners are being logical that they need snowmaking before they invest in the resort. Snowmaking is used everywhere in the Midwest, and icy conditions are very typical there, and people pay $40 a day to ski the small hills in Michigan! When I moved here I thought I would have to drive 10+ hours to Colorado to go skiing, but I feel lucky I can drive 2 hours to Snowbowl. I went 3 times this past year, and it was awesome. Great variety of runs, Aggasiz lift really needs to be upgraded to a high speed quad so it does not close as often due to high winds, but that will be fixed once they are allowed to add snowmaking. Overall, Snowbowl is a good ski area and has the potential to be a huge hit with the Valley's skiers.
