Dombai is a small Russian village whose main claim to fame used to be the fact that Maxim Gorky, a close friend of Stalin, had his summer Dacha in the mountains here, and the Russians established a ski resort in the area. The resort has a good snow record and if lifts are operational its possible to ski year round. The down side is that the lifts are generally elderly and queues of up to three hours have been reported in peak season to use the elderly and inadequate access cable car. The resort has cult status for off-piste 'boarders and skiers but is often dangerous away from the marked trails because of avalanche risk.
