Surrounded on three sides by open sea and with one of the biggest verticals in Scandinavia (increased to 1272m with off-piste) , served by a new gondola, helped to attract a World Cup Downhill in 1991. The ski area at Fagernesfjell, located on the city limits, was originally built to provide recreation for the locals, who today claim to have the best off-piste skiing in northern Europe.
