The ski season on Etna last from mid-December to March. Most of the slopes are wide and sunny, with trail lengths of up to 4.5km. There are spectacular views up to the smoking crater ( a hike up to it is rewarding with a 1400m vertical) and down past green orange groves to the Mediterranean. There are some demanding runs like Canalone degli Svizzeri. The ski lifts had to be abandonned in 1999-2000 when increasingly serious eruptions of Etna made the area unsafe.
