Area Profile

The major ski area of the three by Sarajevo which was originally a tourism and industrial centre, multi-ethnic but was devastated by siege from 1992 - 1995. The three ski areas close to the city have now re-opened with facilities at low prices and the same friendly service as in the years before the war. Jahorina, Sarajevo, Igman and Bjelasnica hosted the 14th Winter Olympics in 1984. The majority of the 16 lifts in the area are made by Poma and are the same standard as most Austrian ski resorts. Latest reports state that operation is eratic because of fluctuating power supplies beyond the lift operators control. Jahorina has a capacity to move 14,000 people per hour, with 4 double chairs and 10 button lifts. Jahorina has 20 km of marked pistes and endless possibilities for ski touring and off piste Skiing. There are eleven hotels by Jahorina and 150 private chalets, three hotels were reported to be operational recently. All others are closed and awaiting investment.
